Air quality: management and monitoring
 EURO3 building

Indoor air quality is more important now than ever, as aerosol transmission is the only transmission method related to air conditioning systems. The risk of contagion can be reduced by adequate and controlled ventilation in occupied spaces.

Therefore, to guarantee a safe environment for our clients, in addition to energy savings, Wise Up Building Analytics offers the air quality control and monitoring service in buildings.

Air quality in times of pandemic

The EURO3 Building is an office building with more than 7 floors, housing a total of approximately 13,000 m2. Following the first wave of Covid-19 and the March 2020 lockdown, the EURO3 Building property decided to review the air quality inside the building to ensure the safety and health of the people who work there.

Joan Roca, Counselor and representative of the property, had the support of the WiseUp team to develop a work plan that aimed to achieve the maximum air renewal to dilute the possible existence of the virus in the building.

We were not starting from scratch, WiseUp already had a consumption monitoring system for the climate and comfort production room in the North Zone and the South Zone in the building. On the other hand, we had an original air conditioning project carried out by the company Ramon Vizcaino, S.A., which is why we started from a base for calculating the flow rates of air conditioners preserved from their design.

Wise Up Work Plan

  1. Compilation of all technical information related to air quality and security measures against the virus.
  2. Consultation of the existing regulation: Rite (Regulation of thermal installations in buildings), recommendations proposed by REYHA and validated by ATECYR, ASHRAE manuals and several articles published by prestigious engineering firms, such as JG Asociados.s.
  3. At that time, empty offices were available to verify on-site with certified anemometers that both the air treatment equipment, the inputs and extractions and the distribution of this through the ducts met the design conditions.
  4. After carrying out the pertinent verification, it was concluded that the building kept faithful the contribution flows according to RITE and that, according to the capacity, the contribution of 12.5 dm3 / h per person assigned by IDA2 for the office category was met.


Given that the best recommendations are to provide the maximum flow of fresh air, it was calculated how much could be the maximum of external air supplied, and it was determined to increase the air supply from the outside by 60%. For this purpose, the supply sections were expanded to be able to keep the existing air conditioners working at speeds that did not generate noise.

Future solutions

  • Compliance with temperature, humidity and Co2 has been extensively monitored and the latter value compared to the exterior as recommended by Rite. Likewise, notices have been programmed when the difference with the outside exceeds 400 ppm, a recommendation in times of pandemic (RITE requires 500 ppm).
  • Analysis of comfort deficiencies produced by over-supply of outside air is carried out.
  • In the short term, it will be possible to know how the loss of energy is recovered by better control.

In conclusion, a control is being carried out to comply with the 60% extra air supply objectives through the WiseUp platform and executing the corresponding actions to maintain the air quality of the building and, therefore, safety and health of the people inside, while optimizing energy consumption.
